When we have a lot of stress in our lives, it piles up into something we call a stress bucket. Our natural method of emptying the stress bucket is known as REM sleep - Rapid Eye Movement. However, REM is costly for the brain as it uses more oxygen than other sleep parrterns. It is therefore, restricted to about 20% of our overall sleep time. If we have a full stress bucket our brain might try and over do the REM, but to stop us it will wake us up - usually in the middle of the night, and this feels different to waking up needing the loo or hearing a loud niose. Sometimes, the brain will let us overdo the REM, and this is when we wake up feeling really groggy and tired.
